Enabling the Future is a global volunteer organisation aimed at providing low cost prosthetics for those who need them. We, at FabLab Sarajevo and FabLab BiH, are the Bosnia and Herzegovina chapter ready to support our community.
More than one billion people or 15% of the world population have some form of disability, with more than 25.5 million who are in need for prosthetic and orthotic devices. These numbers are expected to be growing in the future due to the global increase in chronic diseases. Appropriate prosthetic devices for persons with impairments or loss of limbs are important to assist these persons to participate in domestic, social and employment activities, and to exercise their basic human rights: the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of individuals and their family, including food, housing and medical care and necessary social services.
In BiH, people with disabilities are often economically and socially excluded on a much larger scale than those in developed countries, and due to the high cost involved, amputees in BiH have limited access to prosthetic limbs which constitutes a major barrier for this people to live a normal life. To eliminate this barrier, FabLab BiH and FabLab Sarajevo are developing ultra-low-cost, closed-loop prostheses that are easy to maintain manufacture, not requiring electrodes in contact with the skin or actuator to be incorporated . The movement of the fingers is based on the movement of the wrist or the elbow. This makes the hands not only low cost, lightweight, and simple to control, but the considerable features for the prosthetic.
